Singapore BTT: Speeding Demerit Points Table (Updated for 2026)
If you are studying for the BTT, do not rely on older notes for this topic. The Ministry of Home Affairs raised speeding penalties from 1 January 2026, and several BTT question banks (including ours, until this correction) still had the pre-2026 figures. Here is the current, verified table.
Current Demerit Points for Speeding (Light Vehicles, from 1 Jan 2026)

Why the Higher Tiers Matter So Much
- 24 points is the exact threshold that suspends a regular (non-probationary) licence for the first time within 24 months. Exceeding the limit by 51 km/h or more hits that threshold in a single offence.
- 18 points alone is enough to trigger a second suspension for a driver who has already been suspended once (that threshold drops to 12+ points within 12 months after a first suspension).
- Both 18 and 24 point tiers are far beyond the 13-point revocation line for probationary drivers (drivers in their first year of holding a licence). A single 41 km/h or greater speeding offence can end a new driver's licence outright, no other offence needed.
A Common BTT Trap
A frequent BTT question style asks something like: "A driver will be caught with ___ demerit points if he exceeds the speed limit of the road by more than 50 km/h up to 60 km/h."
With the updated 2026 figures, the correct answer is 24 demerit points, not 18. If you learned 18 from an older guide or a friend's notes, update it now, since this is exactly the kind of paired-number mix-up the BTT likes to test.
Quick Reference for the Full DIPS System
- Probationary drivers (first year of holding a licence): licence is revoked at 13 or more demerit points.
- Non-probationary drivers: first suspension at 24 or more points within 24 months.
- Points are cleared after 12 months with no further offences.
- A licence suspended for 1 year or longer becomes a revocation, not just a pause.
