Here is a question that catches a lot of people out because it seems to have two right answers at first glance.
If a child is below 8 years old, but his height is above 1.35 metres, what must he wear? Seat belt, child restraint, or either?
The correct answer is seat belt.
Why age does not matter here
Before 1 January 2012, Singapore's rule was based on age. Any child under 8 years old had to use a child restraint, full stop.
That rule was changed. Since 1 January 2012, the requirement is based purely on height, not age.
- Below 1.35 metres in height, regardless of age, a person must be secured with an appropriate child restraint (a car seat, booster seat, or similar, suited to their height and weight).
- 1.35 metres or taller, regardless of age, a person must wear a regular seat belt.
So in this question, the child being under 8 does not matter at all. What matters is that he is already above 1.35 metres, which puts him in the "seat belt" category, not the "child restraint" category.
Why this trips people up
A lot of learners have heard the "under 8 needs a child restraint" rule somewhere (it used to be true, and some outdated articles online still repeat it), so they instinctively answer "child restraint" without checking the height detail in the question. The exam is testing whether you know the current rule, not the old one.
If you remember one thing from this, remember it is always about height first. Age is not part of the current rule at all.
